Concussion Accidents & Information

A concussion to the brain occurs when normal brain function is temporarily suspended. While the brain function may seize for a few seconds, a concussion is not equivalent to loss of consciousness. A concussion may temporarily affect short-term memory, normal muscle movement, and behavior. Nausea, headaches, and sensitivity to light are common symptoms that can occur for the next several hours following a concussion. Concussion accidents are particularly common in sports and high impact activities. Fortunately, in most cases concussions do not result in permanent brain damage or head trauma to the brain.

Contusion Information

A contusion occurs when the brain sustains a bruise due to head trauma. Normally the brain floats inside the skull in spinal fluid, which prevents the brain from bumping into the skull. If a blow to the head is too strong or sudden and the fluid cannot absorb the hit, the brain will bump into the skull. This head trauma causes the blood vessel to tear or pop, which results in a bruise on the brain. A bruise or contusion to the brain can cause swelling or bleeding, these types of complications are usually very serious.

What Are the Injury Differences?

While the symptoms of a contusion and concussion may be similar, a contusion is much more serious. If a contusion results in bleeding or swelling of the brain, a life-threatening hematoma blood cot can collect around it. If this occurs, usually surgery is necessary to remove it. However, depending where the hematoma is located, surgery may not be an option. Any type of head trauma can be difficult to detect even if you do receive a CT-scan or x-ray. Head trauma can result even if there are no visible symptoms. Which is why it is best to receive medical help and advice immediately if you have any reason to believe you may have sustained a head injury.
