What is Traumatic Brain Injury?
Traumatic brain injury is the result of an outside force violently injuring the brain. Traumatic brain injury can temporarily or permanently alter or destroy brain function, and sometimes this can occur in ways that are not yet detectable through screenings and tests.
TBI is generally classified by three factors: severity, the anatomical features of the brain injury, and the mechanism – the means by which the traumatic brain injury was incurred. The mechanism refers either to a closed or open injury. A closed injury means the trauma did not actually penetrate to the brain, and an open injury means there was penetration of the skull and the membrane surrounding the brain was breached.
Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury
Loss of consciousness after a head injury can be indicative of traumatic brain injury, even if you only lose consciousness for a few seconds or minutes. Symptoms of milder TBI include nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, a bad taste in the mouth, loss of motor control, and blurred vision. These symptoms may also be present in instances of more severe TBI.
People with even more serious traumatic brain injury can also experience an inability to wake up, constant nausea, convulsions, numbness in the limbs, and unequal pupil size.
